Fire & Smoke Damage

At NHC we have IICRC certified technicians that have been trained to assess each fire and smoke damaged property to determine what approach is needed to mitigate further damages and what type of challenges we will need to overcome.

Processing a fire or smoke damaged property can be very time consuming and in turn, expenses can add up quickly. We have processed hundreds of residential, commercial and industrial fire losses over the years and this has led to the development of procedures and techniques that ensure work is completed as efficiently as possible and with cost saving measures.

Whether it is a light soot cleaning or a large deodorization and material removal job, NHC will provide you with a solution to get the work done right the first time, to avoid costly call backs due to odor complaints once reconstruction is completed. We will manage the project and ensure that all aspects of the cleaning is done properly, from contents processing, packing and moving to total deodorization and cleaning of the structure.

Types of fire & smoke odors

PROTEIN: Usually a result of burnt meat, flesh or poultry. Results in a residue covering all affected areas and requires a thorough cleaning.

SYNTHETIC: Usually results from burnt plastics, rubber, vinyl and other man made products. Smoke webs are a good indicator of this type of odor from a visual perspective. You will see smoke webs form in corners, doorways and other areas of the property.

Smoke webs do not mean the property is dirty, it is a direct result from the smoke cooling and particles clumping together. Residue is usually black and will smudge very easily when cleaned.

NATURAL: Usually results from burnt lumber, other types of wood and paper. Residue can be between gray and black and settles in the form of a powder. Vacuuming is a good method for cleaning this type of loss combined with other methods.

Types of fire & smoke damage

DRY SMOKE: A fast burning fire with high temperatures. Usually causes a powdery ash residue.

WET SMOKE: A slow burning or smouldering fire with low temperatures. Usually leaves a sticky and easily smeared residue along with smoke webs. This type of loss causes a pungent odor.

PROTEIN: A fire that starts by burning meat or poultry. Can spread to the structure of the property as well. This is a loss that is difficult to get approval for cleaning as the residue is mostly invisible. Don’t let this invisible residue mislead you though, this residue can discolour paints, varnishes and fixture finishes. Not to mention, if it is not properly cleaned the odor will remain.

FUEL SOURCE: A fire that is caused by ignited fuel, most commonly due to a furnace puff back which distributes the oil laced soot throughout the property resulting in a wide spread and messy clean-up.

OTHER TYPES OR RESIDUES as a result of fires:

  • Police investigation, fingerprint powder (Difficult to clean)
  • Fire extinguishers (Leaves a residue that can damage materials and cause a secondary set of odors other than the fire)
Note: Fire extinguishers can be toxic and should be cleaned up by a professional company to ensure the safety of all occupants and visitors to the property.

Helpfull Information

Starting the clean-up for a fire and/or smoke damaged property should be completed as soon as possible.

The reason for this is, ash and smoke will cause extensive corrosion, scratching of surfaces, discoloration and penetrate odor deep in to porous materials. This is what we call “Secondary damage” and can be minimized by reacting quickly and cleaning items that may become damaged that the physical integrity of the item is not yet harmed.

Some items may appear to be totally encapsulated by smoke and ash damage but are in fact cleanable and able to be saved if they are attended too quickly and efficiently.

Using a certified fire mitigation company such as NHC, will minimize resulting secondary damage, ensure effective cleaning techniques are implemented, experienced staff will be completing the work and any resulting odor will be removed as a result of fire and smoke odor.

There are many ways to clean and remove odors from a fire loss. Not just one technique can be used for every loss.
